Romans 7 — The Frustration of Self-Effort
📖 Romans 7:24
“O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?”
Beloved,
Romans 7 is the cry of a man trying to fulfill God’s righteousness through self-effort.
The desire to do good was present, but the power was absent.
This is the misery of the flesh:
- sincere intention,
- Absence of the Holy Spirit’s enablement.
The more man struggles independently, the more he discovers the limitation of the flesh.
Romans 7 is God bringing man to the end of:
- self-reliance,
- self-confidence,
- and independent striving.
Before a man can fully experience Romans 8, he must first discover: “I cannot.”
The doing away of self-confidence becomes the doorway into the life of the Spirit.
Prayer
Abba Father,
I confess that there were times when I boasted in my self confidence that caused me great disappointment- I repent!
I ask you to bring me fully out of striving and self-effort into the law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus.
Grant me grace to clearly discern the two operating principles and help me to choose the direction the Holy Spirit gives me- for the flesh is weak but the spirit in willing. In Jesus’ name. Amen 🙏
Confession
I am the Righteousness of God in Christ Jesus!
I no longer trust in the arm of flesh. Christ is my strength, wisdom, and ability.
Praise the Risen Jesus
