“And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath. The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.””
John 5:9-10 NKJV
When we don’t understand the intent of the law, we will end up misinterpreting the content of the law.
What is the purpose of the law ? Is it to prevent evil or to prevent good ? This poor man had been desperately waiting for over 38 years for his healing. When his long awaited healing finally came, he was instructed not to take his bed because that would violate the religious laws of Sabbath.
The Lord Jesus explained that Sabbath was made for man and not man for sabbath. Rules are framed to benefit man and not to enslave man.
God gave man the law with a purpose to bring life, but the deception of sin perverted the law . “And the commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring death. For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me.” Romans 7:10-11
Therefore , Grace had to come through Jesus Christ so that man can be liberated from slavery and exceed the expectation of the law. Hallelujah! Amazing Grace !! Amazing Jesus !!!
